This stunning example of an Oyster 53 was designed by Rod Humphreys and built by McDell marine. She was launched in Auckland in 2003, in time for the New Zealand Oyster Regatta, where Southern Aurora was the overall and class winner. She convincingly beat a fourteen-yacht fleet in both fresh and light air conditions, upwind and downwind.
Last sailed July 2022 from Tahiti to Fiji, Southern Aurora averaged 180nm per day. Capable of consistent 200nm sailing days, in-mast furling, and electric winches make her a joy to sail as well as being a fast cruising yacht.
Only one owner and never chartered, she proved the perfect boat for a circumnavigation.
The Oyster 53 is very much a little sister to the Oyster 56 and an outstanding success in her own right, with fifty-two launched between 1999 and 2008. The 53 is also the smallest Oyster that offers a four-cabin layout.
Fast, well balanced, superb in poor weather and simple to handle, the 53 is deservedly one of the most sought-after oyster designs.
Currently dry stored at Vuda Marina, Fiji, in a cyclone pit paid until May 2023.
